چکیده

Relative compressibilities of five silicate garnets were determined by single-crystal x-ray diffraction on crystals grouped in the same high-pressure mount. The specimens include a natural pyrope [(Mgz.84Feo.IOCao,o6) AI2Si30d, and four synthetic specimens with octahedrally-coordinated silicon: majorite [Mg3(MgSi)Si30 d, calcium-bearing majorite [(Cao.49Mg2.sl)(MgSi)Si30d, sodium majorite [(NaI.88Mgo.d(Mgo.o6SiI.94)Si3012J, and an intermediate composition [(Nao.37Mg2.48)(Mgo.I3All.o7 Sio.8o)Si30I2]. Small differences in the compressibilities of these crystals are revealed because they are subjected simultaneously to the same pressure. Bulk-moduli of the garnets range from 164.8:t 2.3 GPa for calcium majorite to 191.5 :t2.5 GPa for sodium majorite, assuming K' =4. Two factors, molar volume and octahedral cation valence, appear to control garnet compression.

Thermal conductivity and thermodynamics of majoritic garnets: implications for the transition zone

Thermal conductivity at room temperature and pressure (k0), and heat capacity and total entropy as functions of temperature are calculated for majorite^pyrope garnets from new and previous infrared reflectivity and Raman scattering data. The thermodynamic properties, including the effect of cation disorder, vary by less than 4% over this binary, whereas k0 changes by s 400% due to cation disord...

"Majorite" and "silicate perovskite" mineral compositions in xenoliths from Malaita.

Mineral Compositions in Xenoliths from Malaita The report by Collerson et al. (1) of transition zone and lower mantle phases in mantle-derived material from alnöite pipes on Malaita, Solomon Islands, is highly significant in view of the rarity of such natural assemblages. Malaita is part of the obducted southern margin of the Ontong Java Plateau, an area of overthickened oceanic crust (2–7) tha...

Mineral chemistry and petrogenesis of the Amphibolites of Geysour metamorphic complex, east of Gonabad

The Geysour area is located east of Gonabad and is a part of the northern Lut block. The rocks in this area include granitoid and metamorphic rocks. Based on field and mineralogical evidence, the protolith of amphibolite rocks are calc-silicate. The metamorphic rocks of this region are divided into metapelites and amphibolites. Textures, such as post-tectonic garnet and random amphiboles, are i...

Quantifying garnet-melt trace element partitioning using lattice-strain theory: assessment of statistically significant controls and a new predictive model

As a complement to our efforts to update and revise the thermodynamic basis for predicting garnet-melt trace element partitioning using lattice-strain theory (van Westrenen and Draper in Contrib Mineral Petrol, this issue), we have performed detailed statistical evaluations of possible correlations between intensive and extensive variables and experimentally determined garnet-melt partitioning ...

بررسی شیمی کانی و دماسنجی در اسکارن سرویان (استان مرکزی، شهرستان دلیجان)

The Sarvian magnetitic skarn deposit has been formed due to the granodiorite injection into the oligomiocene limestones. It is a calcic skarn deposit with dominated exoskarn section. Garnet and pyroxene are two coupled indicator minerals that have been formed by Mg-Si-Fe-bearing fluid remained from magma crystallization. These minerals are observed extensively in the metasomatic haloes in the c...
